THEY SAILED AND SAILED

An unusual collection of true stories of exploits of the seven seas, including the obvious ones, but also including stories about William Barents and Gerrit de Bier, the Dutch explorers, about William Dampier and Alexander Selkirk and the real Swiss Family Robinson; about John Ledyard and Captain Wilkes and Captain Moses Rogers, and others. Material hard to locate, here brought together. Good stories, not spoiled by being somewhat sentimentalized. The pictures are by a young artist, Woodi Ishmael. I wonder -- are the newcomers swinging back to the old-fashioned techniques? It would seem so.
