REFLECTIONS ON GROWING OLD

The experiences of the author of this book are so unique and far-reaching in their influence on today's world that readers are consequently fortunate indeed to be able to share with him his quiet reflections on growing old -- with dignity, love, hope and courage. Father John LaFarge, S.J., editor emeritus of the Jesuit weekly America and still active as associate editor, author, scholar, champion of human rights and founder of the Catholic Inter-racial Councils in the United States, speaks here with wisdom seasoned by eighty-four years of dedicated living. The venerable Father LaFarge considers old age ""a gift, a very precious gift, not a calamity"", and he thanks God for it daily. The acceptance of each day of life with simplicity and humility, he reasons, will help each man to the acceptance of where life inexorably leads -- to death. He views old age as a time of prayer, a time to think more of others, and the steady process of growth through diminishment. In today's youth-oriented environment, his words of serene judgment bring insight and comfort to both the aged and middle-aged who will find Reflections On Growing Old the most valuable book they can choose as a preparation for a full and meaningful old age leading to eternal life.
