Rather than straight whodunit technique, and with no Norths, this combines murder with romance in sound narrative. Martin Brooks, OSS ex-Major, now junior partner in a law firm, is sent to give a legal assist to his ex-wife's husband. The murder of the husband, later of his secretary, points to Ann, and Martin- fighting to prove her innocence- is compelled to sidestep Captain Hemrich's amiable persistence. Untangling the undercurrents at a weekend party, getting the full-length portrait of the dead man. Martin is able to build up a case against the real killer. Satisfactory.
