Mr. Brady's Camera Boy, a Civil War story (1951, p.323) revealed this author's talents for robust period fiction with a sharply defined angle. In this, mid-eighteenth century New York City and its fire house operations come alive with equal verve. David, visiting his uncle who lives near Ludlow Street Station, No. 8, has a colorful string of adventures. He gets acquainted with the men, their engines, their Dalmatian Pete. Before he leaves, he has led them to the capture of a firebug, recovered Pete from captivity in a rival fireman's house, and witnessed No. 8's acquisition of a new steam engine. Sure fire.
