Against the background of life on a mid-18th century Carolina plantation is told the story of Polly Lucas' thirteenth summer and her share in her sister Eliza's struggle to grow indigo for the British market. Not a dull moment- the incidents are lively and exciting. Polly and her friends and the Negroes are drawn in the round, the atmosphere of the period is as real as anything- adult or juvenile- I have read. True content material in the indigo story, fascinating in the handling- the author has made skillful use of direct source material.
