This is the reflection of Sabina, now dead, in the eyes of three of her childhood friends and the dispelling of the hatred and envy she had roused in them. An auction of Sabina's effects brings Kit, Maggie and Viola to buy a locket Kit's husband, Luke, had given Sabina years before -- Kit because she believes Luke still loves Sabina, Maggie because she thinks Gil can never paint without Sabina's encouragement and Viola because she needs a token to prove she has reached Sabina's level. The auction takes them back into their pasts and as the present catches up with them they each find a happiness they had not known they possessed. Cushiony, but more intelligence here than usual.
