The Patterson children (The Treasure of Echo Valley; 1964, p. 1069, J-351) wriggle their way into and out of danger again, this time while they are vacationing in Newfoundland. The opening, which mainly emphasizes touristic information about the area, is quite slow. The adventure does build up, though. Meg, Mat and Tim get separated from a group of hikers in a sudden, dense fog. Stumbling around they happen to make their way to a cave, which turns out to contain the pirate treasure they had previously heard described. And somebody, but they can't tell who, seems to be trying to sabotage their efforts to retrieve it. Pirate treasures in hidden caves are a dime a dozen, but the story is told with some freshness here and a real degree of suspense.
