MADE IN ITALY

By

Pub Date: May 20th, 1957
Publisher: Knopf

Patterned on the other Knopf books- Made In , Made In China, etc., this surveys the modern arts and crafts of Italy, bringing them into focus through reference to the past, and presents the stories behind the leatherwork, pottery, lace, cooking and so forth, which are familiar to most Americans as products only. As each is told, we learn the techniques of making majolica, of Florentine leather tooling, of the work in southern cameo factories, and even of popular Italian music. Broadening these portraits is the continual reference to the connection between the professional artist and the artisan. An interesting study.
