It is difficult to analyze the indefinable charm of this book. It has something of the quality of Sheila Macdonald's Sally in Rhodesia, something of Anna Gordon Keown's Mr. Thompson in the Attic -- a quiet unexpected sort of humor, a sense of private jokes shared with the reader, a lack of dependence on incident for the movement of the story. Not a book for everyone -- but those of your customers who like shy fun, rather than boisterous merriment, will like this book about a man who seemed to fail at life. Remember Queed -- and V V's Eyes -- Jim is a Henry Sydnor Harrison character.
