A straightforward, good-natured account, based on the author's experience, of Kim's rescue of an orphaned baby squirrel, whom he raises indoors until its natural behavior (digging in Mom's flowerpots, which Kim dismisses, then chewing up his own ship model, which he takes more seriously) becomes such a nuisance that Kim and Dad make a ""nestbox"" and teach it to live outdoors in a tree. The growing squirrel's mischief and Darrow's sketches of Kim enjoying it provide a spot of diversion, and certainly Zweifel steers would-be wild pet raisers in the right direction.
