Francis Hackett's wife is a Dane. Through her, he came to know and love Denmark, through visiting her cities, her farms, her homes. This is an intimate and appreciative picture of Denmark before the Nazis broke faith with a neutral country. A picture of a democratic order, highly civilized, wholly efficient. He does not give a picture of a Denmark beaten by Nazi fifth column activities. He seems to sense no internal discord that would be responsible. He agrees that Germany knew how to get at Denmark's businessmen and Denmark's aristocrats. His is a backward looking tribute to a country he feels sure has not been eliminated.
