THE GREAT DEBUREAU

I found this peculiarly fascinating, and I read it as fictionized biography, and only just discovered that the publishers were scheduling it as fiction. So ""you pays your money and you takes your choice"". I think it would go farther and last longer as biography, perhaps in the E. Barrington tradition, to be sure, but authentic factually, to the spirit and character of the Charlie Chaplin of his time. Great comedian -- great tragedian -- great mind, it takes all three facets to give the color of this rare personality, who made Pierrot the goal of Paris society, while he was still struggling for a hand to mouth existence in a cheap slum amusement house, grateful merely for the chance to act, provided he could feed himself and his dog on his earnings. It is an absorbing and unique story, dramatically told, with warmth of feeling for the man and his background. A book that should be easy to sell and easy to rent. Have someone on your staff read it, for it may need word of mouth enthusiasm to launch it.
