Grahame Greene as a Catholic is the subject of this exhaustive and enlightening study of a controversial novelist. Professor Kunkel of St. John's University feels that the four truly Catholic novels (Irighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter and The End of the Affair) are Catholic without being aggressively sectarian, highly denominationalized or piously evangelical. He finds in Greene a preoccupation with evil which first was evident in his early travel books,- Journey without Maps and Another Mexico. In the novels this is evident in his most complex and fascinating characters, the sinners who elicit Greene's sympathies. This very stimulating book should be of interest to Green's admirers, not only to Catholic readers, and to students of contemporary literature.
