KIRKUS REVIEW

This book is written for parents, teachers, and other people directly concerned with children and adolescents to help them spot and handle situations in which the young have been severely affected. It discusses the concept of mental health, of first aid actions for it; it tells how to obtain professional help and how to ascertain the necessity for it. Included in the contents are sections on situations that would be disturbing to most children (death of someone close, hospitalization, etc.), situations related to sex, occurrences of delinquent behavior, situations deriving from adult instability or the child's own acute behavior, from narcotics or essentially from a physical disorder. The situation, the most satisfactory First- Aider available, first aid measures, workshop cases with questions for discussion, prognosis and when to turn to the professional comprise the discussion of each problem. Mainly helpful in alerting those close to children of probable rough spots and whether the child's reaction is a generally expected or over-intense one, and how to approach the child in stress situations.
