YOUNG CROW RAIDER

Following the pattern of his Young Sioux Warrior, (1952, p. 259), almost to the letter, this transposes the scene to a Crow tribe while maintaining all the same elements- a youngster with a handicap to conquer while hunting, raiding and learning the skills of manhood. Thirteen year old Bent Arrow, wounded in babyhood by the Sioux, is the hero. While the pain in his leg is still sharp at times, he trains himself rigorously enough to go on a private raid of retaliation with his uncle Flying Arrow- against the Sioux, and there is full recognition when they return successful. Too idealized, this again endows the Indians with white men's qualities and they seem to get their skills and their thrills mechanically.
