The wordy, and rather sloppily self-centered love affair of Robbie Suffren, a sculptor and a romantic, and his Martha, mother of three and married to a conventional clod. Not recognizing that he is really in love with Martha, Robbie marries Cathie -- who didn't understand his work but did love him devotedly. After a few months of marriage, Robbie sees more and more of Martha, becomes her lover, and persuades her to bear his child. The impracticality of this romantic conception ricochets on both of them as Martha's husband leaves for Reno, and Cathie, worn down by the loss of one child and the miscarriage of a second, dies. New York -- Arizona -- Southampton as decor for indecorous behaviour which is fatuous rather than sentimentally sympathetic or amorously amusing.
