A novel of postwar Ireland which explores spiritual values in the modern world sometimes mystically, sometimes lyrically, and often effectively. There is Ezra, a returned soldier who has seen all types of violence, fears and hatred, whose wife has deserted him and who believes the woman he loves is dead; Kavanagh, whose unbridled passions lead him to perpetrate a religious fraud; Father Mellowes, strong in his faith, and his sister, Romilly, unawakened in her innocence and purity. Kavanagh's murder of Annie precipitates the rounding out of all their lives, answers some of their questions -- but not all. The effect of a small act of violence against larger scale inhumanities, cold justice against soft-footed complacencies in compassionate terms. Of particular interest to Catholics but not necessarily limited to that audience.
