KIRKUS REVIEW

The life of Jean De Brebeuf, Jesuit missionary to the Hurons in the 16th Century, is the subject of this well documented and interesting biography. The work of this pioneer missionary was carried on in the midst of the struggle between the French and English for the control of Canada and of the savage and bloody struggles between the Iroquois and the Hurons. The almost unbelievable savagery of the Indian tribes claimed this missionary and others as victims of their cruel torture and the description of the fortitude of these men of God and their converts under torture is one of the most vivid chapters in the book. This is a book, the interest of which is more historical than religious and as the author is an authority on this period it should have a wide appeal to students of that period of our history.
