KNUTE ROCKNE

By

Publisher: Doubleday

There have been great football coaches in the past,- Yost of Michigan, Stagg of Chicago, Haughton of Harvard- and the modern game has developed its quota of outstanding figures. But to all players and fans, the all-time, all-American great among coaches will remain Notre Dame's Knute Rockne. Here is an amazing, sometimes- understandably- sentimental, yet down-to-earth biography of the coach and the man, by a fine sports writer, who as an undergraduate came under Rockne's spell, and later worked closely with him up to his untimely death. His book catches the heart and spirit of Rockne. It is full of the intimate personal details of his early life, his zeal for perfection, his determination to get for himself the education he wanted- even after an interlude of working. It portrays his competitive and combative spirit, his techniques of playing and coaching, his method of developing the best in his men and in his teams. It records the games he played, the teams he coached. It brings out the inspirational quality that extended to the school, changing Notre Dame from a parochial school to an outstanding university. Rockne was more than a coach. He had been a distinguished student, a good Chemistry teacher; he was a great personality, intelligent, forceful, gentle, hard-boiled, humorous, spiritual, generous, demanding- and at all times respected and beloved. His death saddened millions; his spirit still lives. And this book will interest an audience reaching beyond those who knew him worked with him- were inspired by him (among whom the writer of this review counts himself).
