Sho, servant in the house of a ``nasty'' woman with a face ``as sour as spoiled milk,'' has but one friend: a black cat she calls Secret. When Secret is discovered and turned out, a wise man tells Sho that she can be found at perilous Cat Mountain. Following, Sho is saved from death by the cat, who also rewards her for her friendship; the haughty mistress comes to a fitting end after greed drives her to attempt the same dangerous journey. Levine's adaptation of a French version of this unsourced Japanese tale is lean, lively, and much enhanced by Buguet's beautiful textured paper collages, which recall traditional Japanese prints. Deep earth tones played against scarlet and dramatic perspectives add an appropriately ominous tone. Four double spreads are free of text; elsewhere, full-page art is opposed to blocks of text and dynamically angular vignettes. A handsome presentation of a satisfying tale.
