The headmaster of the Brooks School discusses secondary education -- and the aims of liberal education as it faces today's challenge -- the supremacy of the vocational. He defends the private school as a safeguard against the tyranny of the average, as a medium for progressive experimentation. He outlines the handicaps of the public school, lack of funds, overstress of the vocational. He outlines the ideals and methods of liberal education which develops mind and spirit as a unity, maintains types of discipline, without restraint, and aims towards forming good citizens. Not as challenging as the Van Doren book (see Page 418 -- Liberal Education), but intelligent analysis.
