Author of Miss Hargreaves (1941) writes again of the supernatural, in the story of the exchange of lives between Gregory Spillett, English schoolmaster, and Melchior, an archangel, so that Gregory may attain his ambition to fly, and Melchior, his to walk. Both are doomed to trouble -- Melchior because of his unhappiness over the dismal emotional and moral atmosphere of the school, the trouble his devotion to Matron Vivien causes, and his unworldly approach to mundane matters: Gregory through the misadventures his gift brings him. How their situations are resolved gives the book a double climax. Not the general appeal of the former -- but original.
