KIRKUS REVIEW

An able action story uses a well weathered background to good and fresh effect, picks up the traces of the first Overland Mail run to California in 1858 when the seditious South is attempting to take California out of the Union. Young Cullen look gets an assignment- with his sketches- to accompany an Eastern journalist; he also given a bottle, an envelope and two ferrets- to deliver to a Senator in San Francisco, and is further charged with the surveillance of a young girl, Jennie, scheduled to get off in El Paso. Cullen proves equal to this and more as he runs up against a slave hunter and a pro-slavery Colonel; as he keeps Jennie with him all the way when her destination seems unsuitable; and as he survives an Apache attack against the coach and the Colonel's on himself before he fulfills his obligations... Honor-ours-bound to succeed even with home viewers who are not always home readers.
