From the time when Branch Rickey signed him on as the first Negro in major league baseball in 1947, Robinson faced considerable discrimination. His own story alternates with the stories of other players--Henry Aarons, Ernie Banks, Jim Gilliam, etc. After his retirement, Robinson became a noted (and also controversial) spokesman for Negro rights. ""The big challenge,"" he says, ""to the Negro today is to fight for the right to be equal and then to qualify as an equal."" His book is a powerhitting attack toward that end.
