Competent and pleasing job -- this biography of a Now England school-master, founder and long-time headmaster of Groton. It is first of all the story of the school itself, as identified with Dr. Peabody, its moving spirit; interwoven is his personal story. This ""last of the Puritans"" is not an overly warm subject, though the warm affection of the author, an ""old boy"", shows him through what he stood for and how he accomplished his aims. Here is a picture of the masters, the boys, the severity which at times bordered on intolerance, the development of the school and its growing reputation for nobbahness. Here is the Rector as the school and the public knew him. The market will be almost wholly Grotonians.
