Volume 5 of The Daedalus Library, Utopias and Utopian Thought takes up a concern reactivated in our own time by the conception of The Great Society. Editor Frank Manuel, Professor of History at New York University, sees three utopian distinctions--""utopias of calm felicity,"" characteristic of the period from Thomas More's day to that of the French Revolution, ""dynamic socialist and other historically determinist utopias"" of the nineteenth century and the psychological and philosophical utopias, or ""eupsychias"" of the twentieth. The volume considers both the intellectual prescriptions and conceptualizations and the pragmatic attempts, the significance, goals, history and possibilities of the ideal society.
