Just as he did in The Benjamin Franklin Papers (1962 p. 604) the editor pro an excellent introduction to Jefferson through the man's own words. Working from primary and secondary sources, he has excerpted the pertinent, provided punctuation and corrected the spelling for the easy use of students and interested laymen. The editorial comment that provides the transition and clarification of the material quoted a good running description of the times as well as the development of Jefferson.
