KIRKUS REVIEW

Companion volume to Songs and Games from the Americas. This is an admirable collection of 20 stories from 20 Latin American countries. I think one should have been included from the U.S. to stress the meaning of ""the Americas"" -- one, too, from Canada. But these are definitely Latin-America stories of personified animals, of wishing rings, of witches and enchantment, of princes and princesses, of wicked stepmothers -- and -- the best ones --of peasants and homely virtues and homely vices. The stories are short -- pungent -- with a very special humor and imaginative quality.
