With opening mention of the origin of counting and record keeping, this goes on knowledgeably to explain the various bases of our present Arabic number system. The sense behind addition, multiplication (really a dispensable), division, fractions, and decimals is revealed through numerous examples of how these methods function, in themselves and how they relate to each other. A discussion of number systems based on 10, 20, the dozen and 2 follow. For those who are stumped by the perils of arthmetic this will probably not offer much solace, but for the mathematically inclined, further clarification is in store.
