Another of those books about an unfortunate, a dispossessed, written with some morbidity, some violence, and a certain vitality. A spare, modern handling for the story of Bob, crippled at thirteen, angry, bitter, dissatisfied, who loafs around thinking about writing, and about women. The death of his mother and a small inheritance makes possible his trip to California and the acquisition of a small beach house. There he meets Frances, cheap joint canary, with whom he falls in love and who turns from his to a band leader. A run-in of the band leader with Rob, the death of Frances, and dissolutionment and despair, as Rob returns to Ohio. Limited in appeal. P. L's word like.
