The predictable pattern, again historical, surgical and romantic, this tells of Julian Chisholm who recovers from his Civil War wounds and is determined to put his inherited plantation Chisholm Hundred back on its feet. With him is Jane, whom he'd married during the war, a Union agent, and now- with her liberal notions- branded as a ""Tankee"" and ""nigger lover"". And against him is Lucy, whom he'd once loved (and still desires) feverishly, who with her Yankee millions, is buying up all the land and is determined to get Chisholm Hundred and Julian too. Through these years as Jane goes away on a secret mission, as Julian fights off Lucy's overtures, as he refuses to bend to the Kian rising in violence, a climax is reached when its members ride against Chisholm Hundred, Lucy is killed, and Jane returns in the nick of time for Julian to perform a Caesarean section and deliver their son.... A popular prescription, I suppose, rentally speaking.
