Good of its kind -- definitely not highbrow -- this is again full dosage of romantic-cum-complications which is substantial pop reading (with more authority than most lay-medic fiction since Slaughter is a Lt. Col, in the Medical Corps- a surgeon). The story concerns one Chris, discharged from the army after an injury, who returns to his southern home town, now on the boom with shipyard work, but victimized by a Dr. Dwight and his crooked compensation clinic. Incited by Karen, young Norwegian doctor, Chris makes a frontal attack on Dwight, starts his own hospital on a socialized setup, takes over Dwight's failures, stifles a typhus epidemic which Dwight should have forestalled, and clears himself of a shyster lawsuit slapped on him by Dwight. His ""affair"" with Karen is incidental; it is Roz whom he loves and marries.
