Companion volume to the useful Crowell's Handbook of World Opera, this for the aficionado is a bonanza. Everything you could want is here (except the musical score). In the first part the fourteen operettas are given with synopses, casts, settings, words of songs and choruses, and historical notes on productions and early performances. The second part tells the story of the checkered careers of the principals, of D'Oyly Carte, who did so much to bring the works before the public, of the quarrels that separated them, the circumstances that brought them together -- and of some of the names made famous through the productions. A valuable reference tool.
