CYCLOPEDIA OF LITERARY CHARACTERS

16,000 characters from some 1300 novels, dramas, and epics drawn from world literature."" The works selected are arranged alphabetically by title. Characters in each book are listed in the order of diminishing importance. Each principal character gets the lengthiest writeup which seldom exceeds 100 or 150 words. Other characters are identified by full, name, with pronunciations where needed, and their relationships to each other are described. The analyses are brief and superficial. They serve as a brush up rather than a replacement for reading the books involved. Designed as a general reference tool, the organization of the indexes makes the book easy to use. There is an author index, and an alphabetical character index. The editor is responsible for the Masterplots Series which has enjoyed good sales in public and school libraries as a reference item and this should prove to be equally useful.
