DOMESTIC RELATIONS

The title of this story collection highlights the major single thread which is recognizable throughout. As in his previous collections Mr. O'Connor introduces an appealing continuity by repeating the characters, though each tale is in itself complete. Set in Ireland, each story is a vignette on some phase of domestic life -- puppy love, the heartbreaks of adolescence, serious courtship, marriage. Connubial bliss is viewed from all angles; from the eye of a son, a young eligible, and from the eye of two young boys who peek from the safety of their attic into the privacy of a marriage bed. Framed by these overt themes many nuances and undertones emerge, all cast in the fabric of Irish life and character. The author's flexible style applied to his skillful arrangement of stories and choice of content is sympathetically provocative, warm and entertaining. The O'Connor following will be pleased.
