KIRKUS REVIEW

Twelve stories about big league and minor league baseball by the author The Team and Flashing Spikes and stories in the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. These stories do not have the sensitivity and humor which characterize Ring Lardner's stories, but O'Rourke catches the drama of the nine-inning great moments, the kindly and sentimental cynicism and loyalty of the baseball players, and the sounds and color of a great crowd waiting under a hot sun for the pitcher to take the long walk to the mound. This collection is baseball writing in the grand manner with an appeal for the whole family from teen-age up.
