This and Charles Marquis Warren's Valley of the Shadow (Doubleday-report P.318) offer many parallels for a revealing picture of the post Civil War period- Indian warfare- the Apaches- and feud between two men. Both masculine-slanted, this one is perhaps better for the young adult market than the other...Larimore, sent to the territory because of his experienced leadership, encounters again Bob Jackson who had tricked him nine years back, and married his girl, Mary. Jackson already unloved, loses caste by the arrival of Larimore, who moves surely, successfully, against the Apache, Cochise. The triangle involving Jackson's wife is solved by Larimore's awakening interest in another girl. Authentic adventure.
