KIRKUS REVIEW

New country- and rough- landscapes these stories of danger and decision, brave and broken men. Johnson, a mild man, is needled into a fight by a spirited girl and two roughnecks; Pollard, a civilian scout, is detailed to bring a reluctant bride to an old Chief but wins her himself; a boy, who needs a stake, raffles himself off; a gambler makes a deal with a widow- and finds there's more than money involved; a man who liked the easy life redeems himself through a boy; etc., etc. These and others go to prove that character can determine circumstance, and there's a stiff upper lip, a sure control.
