Frank Stockton's story has been re-dressed with Sendak's illustrations. The combination is perfect. Stockton's almost forgotten stories deserve the light of day and his ghost should rise to thank ""the Picasso of children's books"". The bonus extra here is a short essay by the illustrator about why he drew the griffin as he did. It provides a quick glimpse at how a serious illustrator goes about his work.
