PORTRAIT PAINTING-STEP BY STEP

A more basic book than the earlier (1950) Practical Portrait Painting provides a ""practical demonstration with a clear commentary"" for the beginning painter-but suggests that you master the medium (his earlier Oil Painting for Everyone will help) before attempting portraiture. While the central part of the book deals with drawing a portrait in charcoal and painting in oils, earlier chapters provide a briefing on approach, color value, working conditions and materials, the choice of a sitter, and the later chapters contrast the direct method versus the indirect and include a few anecdotes. There are 12 pages of photographs to complete a how to you too- text of elementary, essential instruction.
