Stilley mentions the stiff competition for vet school entrance and, elsewhere, the growing, unmet demand for vets, and he appends a list of AVA-accredited colleges. However, this is mostly concerned with a vet's actual work--whether inserting an arm up to the shoulder in a cow's uterus to correct a breech delivery, inspecting feed animals in a slaughterhouse, treating zoo animals fed junk by the public, or handling a race horse with a broken leg, a sea lion with lungworms, or a research rat with pneumonia. The focus on specific cases should interest would-be vets, though the Whitneys' Animal Doctor (1973) mixes that with more down-to-earth career realities.
