The author of The Bear That Wasn't (Dutton -- 1946) which attracted wide attention offers another modern parable in the story of the 'possum who was always smiling and perfectly happy in the forest and hanging by his tail in a tree. But a group of picnickers from the city make up their minds that he is not a ""smiley"" 'possum but a ""stupidly, stupidly"" 'possum, determine to make him smile and take him to the city, to a movie and a night club. This makes the 'possum sad and his mouth droops claim they have made him smile. For this the people are decorated and the 'possum returns to the woods -- to smile again. A moral here- -for anyone that wants to look.
