ST. PAUL AND HIS LETTERS

This volume is neither homiletical nor critical, but rather serves as an introduction to the letters of the great Apostic. Dr. Beare was first interested in presenting much of this material to a radio audience, and so he sought for a hearing by minds not necessarily agreeing or even Christian, but rather, at least willing to acknowledge the existence of this unusual body of literature, and the fact that over the centuries it has a profound influence upon our culture. He has included all the Pauline literature except (which he considers deutero-Paul). His treatment makes for straight through reading with interest by anyone with at least a high school background. the author gives the letters makes them come alive. He places them historically, he explains how St. Paul's personality has marked them; he unravels the puzzling implications of some passages, and he gives the reader a sense of sharing Paul's mind as he wrote. This book should be available to any teacher dealing in class with the work, and Christian laymen will be grateful for this presentation of the fruits of scholarship in a form which the ordinary layman can be expected to comprehend.
