In his first picture book, Burstein uses dialogue among Mommy, Daddy, and two-or three-year-old Rebecca on a peaceful afternoon to convey the warmth and security in their nuclear family. Rebecca doesn't want to take a nap, but does fall asleep, as does Mommy; Rebecca wakes first, and goes outdoors to explore with Daddy; tired, she falls asleep again, and so does Dad--so that, in an amusing reversal, Mommy gets her private time with Rebecca when she wakes again. Cogancherry's carefully defined, realistic illustrations are unusually attractive in portraying the idealized rural setting and the relationships in this loving, companionable family. Sturdy little Rebecca, whether pouting because it's time to go home or joyfully showing her father a toad, is especially endearing.
