The primitive and gory struggle for existence that faces animals of the forests is recorded in this fine collection of stories of the mid-Appalachian range. There is accurate and interesting and at times almost too realistic information about the habits of mink, beaver, black bear, fox, raccoon, bats, skunks, hawks, and even a cat that has gone wild. Often there is not enough food for all, and the cry of battle is heard along the shrill winter winds that whistles through rocky caverns and along frozen slopes. Possibly frightening for a sensitive child.
