THE MODERN HISTORY OF PERU

Bearing the imprint of a publishing house that has done yeoman service to the cause of the new literature on the economics, politics and history of Latin America, this new history of Peru carries its story to the early 1960's, barely touching the administration of the incumbent president, Fernando Belaunde. The author has long been interested in Latin American historical questions and has written before on Peru. If anything, he is somewhat too apologetic for the past wrong-doings of the Lima aristocratic establishment, and his treatment of the reform-minded Apra party of Haya de la Torre tends to deprecate its idealistic phase and de-emphasize the curious accommodation that the party has made with the establishment. But these qualifications in no manner should shroud the genuine merit of the book.
