Fourth, last and best of the tetralogy reconstructing Vermont's decision to be an independent nation if she could not be a state, this follows the ragged sons of the granite state whose determination turned aside German, British and Tory forces at the Battle of Bennington. Characters from earlier books reappear as a York Stater, won to the Vermont cause, woos a Tory girl. There are secondary themes built around the little families who made their contribution to the cause of liberty. Good story-telling -- good history.
