The lost, not too lost, manpower of this war typified by Dan Reed in his emotional experimentation overseas and at home, to his final romantic readjustment with his wife. Afraid to go back to Nancy, the girl he'd married, in that he'd find her changed, Dan has a short and satisfactory affair with Judy, an Aussie, is eventually sent back to America and to Nancy. Poised, precise, passionless, Nancy evades him, and when Dan is sent to New York, he goes alone. There he takes up with Judy Grant, whose dead husband's memory is kept alive by her obsessive sister, Liza. Liza's complete breakdown, and Nancy's arrival in New York, free Dan from Judy, and Dan and Nancy take up where they left off before the war... A frank, at times basic, modern manner for a story of some reading- but no literary- values.
