The story of a clock salesman, Floyd Sheldon, in the few years before the depression, written in imitation (but lacking the finish- and the depth) of O'Hara, and returning to the verbal vulgarities, physical license of the prohibition era. Floyd meets Anita Gerrity at a party where they both get drunk and then spend the night in his apartment. After this, a large portion of the book is devoted to his attempts to get her back into bed. He gets her a job as a receptionist in the company for which he works, and they finally have an affair which terminates when Anita resents his change in attitude. For Floyd, once liberal, becomes cold, calculating, ruthless and bigoted- personifying the very characteristics he had once loathed... Crude, and in a sense competent, if you have a market for flash.
