Mahoney's Monopoly Investigation forms the background for both of these books, tracing the development from an idea to the largest corporation in the world. Both authors are highly critical of some of the methods, both are equally cognizant of capitalism at its best. The Coon book is lighter in vein; the Danielson shows a more intensive research background. Coon tells the story so that it reads like a fairy tale; Danielson seems at times a crusader, balancing the assets of his Frankenstein against the evils which have been covered by brilliant propaganda methods. There is a good deal of debunking and some muck-raking, but he concedes that they have not practised the skullduggery of many of the utilities, and gives credit for their social viewpoint and practice. His plea is for greater regulation.
